Ancient Perge, one of the chief cities of Pamphylia is recognized by Hellenic towers, dating back to the 3rd century BCE. In front of the gate are the ruins
of the the 2nd century CE agora and stoa. The floor of the stoa and shops was
made of colored mosaics.. My favorite section is the Nymphaeum, a triumphal
fountain whose stream flowed down a water channel along the collonaded street.
It dates from the reign of Emperor Hadrian (130-150 CE). The mathematician Apollonius
from Perge lived and worked here. Apollonius was a pupil of Archimedes and wrote
a series of eight books on geometry. |
