Catalhoyuk (catal is Turkish for "fork", hoyuk for "mound") was a very large Neolithic and Chalcolithic proto-city settlement in southern Anatolia, which existed from approximately 7500 BCE to 5700 BCE and flourished around 7000 BCE It is the largest and best-preserved Neolithic village site found to date. GobekliTepe is the oldest site we know of. In July 2012, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our detour to Catal Hoyuk was well worth the extra 90km. Fine museum and some of the recent excavations shown under cover (the 1960's finds deterioriated quickly once exposed, so this time they were ready). Also talked briefly with an archaeologist from UC Berkeley and small team excavating an adjacent building.
