| Magnificent blue tiled mosques and Ottoman palaces, pure turquoise seas, rocky, forested mountains and spectacular geological oddities -- Turkey is all this. In Istanbul we begin with the Byzantine masterpiece of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Justinian’s underground cisterns, the sprawling opulence of the Topkapi Palace, perched on the cliffs above the Bosphorus and bustling covered and spice markets. After visiting the Anatolian Museum in Ankara, we move to Cappadocia to explore troglodyte caves and underground cities. Pottery and carpet weaving are among the many crafts to be found here. From Antalya, we walk in ruins of once prosperous city states such as Perge, Aspendos, following Alexander to Phaselis and the flaming rocks at Chimaera, Heading southwest we travel to Konya, the shrine of Rumi, founder of the whirling dervishes. On the way we stop for the rock cut Lycian tombs at Myra and the St. Nicklolas church. A pre-tour extension visits the Green Mosque of Edirne, Troy, and the silk markets of Bursa. For a post tour extension join our gulet cruise offering unique views of the otherwise inaccessible and rugged Turquoise coast. Gulets are wooden hulled traditional Turkish boats with sleeping cabins and en suite toilet and shower. Each day we drop anchor and explore with swimming, hiking and other activities. 16 day tour starting in early September
