Walking & Sailing Through History:
Turkey - September 2019

This was our escorted tour conducted September 2019 - Our next tour, planned for 2020, has been tentatively reset as a tour of Bulgaria and eastern Turkey in fall of 2021.

Magnificent blue tiled mosques and Ottoman palaces, pure turquoise seas, rocky, forested mountains and spectacular geological oddities -- Turkey is all this. 

In Istanbul we begin with the Byzantine masterpiece of Hagia Sophia,  the Blue Mosque,  Justinian’s underground cisterns, the sprawling opulence of the Topkapi Palace, perched on the cliffs above the Bosphorus and bustling covered and spice markets. Next we headed to the  Green Mosque of Edirne, Troy, and the silk markets of Bursa. Onward to the Anatolian Museum in Ankara, In  Cappadocia we explored troglodyte caves, fairy chimneys & hoodoos and underground cities.  Pottery and carpet weaving are among the many crafts to be found here. 

Heading southwest we stopped at Sagalassos then continued to Konya, the shrine of Rumi, founder of the whirling dervishes.  From Antalya, we walked in ruins of once prosperous city states such as Perge, Aspendos,  followed Alexander to Phaselis and the flaming rocks at Chimaera, On the way we stop for the rock cut Lycian tombs at  Myra and the St. Nickolas church.  We finished by exploring the ancient cities of Aphrodisias, Hierapolis and Ephesus
