Jaisalmer [11/4/2003 journal]
While walking thru Jaisalmer on our city tour we'd gathered several interesting shops to visit.
After lunch we returned to Dadomers, and started looking at their displays of textiles. These varied from newly made pieces to
exquisite quilts made from old wedding saris. As the afternoon wore on it became clear this would be a major stop.
Eventually Audrey and the others went for a sunset camel ride while I stayed to select several bales of goods to be shipped home. After the selection and bargaining, complete with an entrance from the owner himself – a huge man, sweating profusely, and with many other transactions underway even as we gradually came to an agreement. Then I could relax a bit, talking with the salesman Virander, and watching the street life. Two tailors were brought in. First to quickly add new borders to some of our purchases. Then to create shroud-like coverings to protect the bales during shipping. Crammed in like sausages, it took several rearrangements to prepare the bags, which were then closely stitched shut . The seams were sealed with red wax that would somehow survive the journey to Seattle. Around 7 pm I finally left in a rickshaw loaded with the bundles and we
careened our way out the city gates, down the parapet ramp and out to our hotel.
