China: Yangtze river -- 3 Gorges

YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE 11/3 Saturday

Board the first class cruise ship 4-STAR PRESIDENT YELLOW CRANE at 0900 (full facilities with private cabins).  Cruise the rapid waters of the upper reaches; go ashore at Fengdu, "the City of Ghost".

Changjiang = long river, local name for the Yangtze.  Up at 5:30 with transfer to the wharf downtown at 7.  Drop down to the boat by funicular.  Underway about 8.  Met the 4 Australian/Taiwanese we met on the Li Cruise.  Overcast day, muddy brown river, not conducive to much photogrraphy, but at least the rain has stopped, and it looks like we might even get some sun breaks.  About 15 deg C.  Nice cabins, with entire wall glassed, so great views from the rooms; good sundeck topside.

Around noon passed what we guessed had to be Fuling, from River Town;  what a dreary and depressing place to spend 2 years!  Large dikes along large sections of the town to wall off the rising waters, while other parts of the city are left as is to be flooded.

There are 142 people aboard, about 120 are from the US or Canada, with a sprinkling from China, Taiwan and 2 Europeans.  Despite that, the orientation was still given in 2 languages, way too long, when it could have been covered in ˝ the time in both languages or even less with handouts.  Decent lunch, good spareribs, thin beancurd stuffed with pork; Sesame seed coated french fries; Honey glazed dates stuffed with rice paste; Tomato soup with ginger and beef

At 3 pm dock at Fengdu.  Up the wharf stairs, past souvenir and oranges sellers, then a shuttle bus to take us to the ‘Ghost City’.  Met our local guide, Li, speaking at but not thru a megaphone.  Took chair lift up the hill, then started ascent thru heaven to hell.  Worst guide of the trip – very slow, repetitive, trying to make everything a game (but one no one could lose).  At each stop, we had to go thru whatever superstitious behavior was traditional, rather than yesterday’s Dazu guide who just described the area and culture for us.  So, “you have to stand on one foot on this round stone for 3 sec”,  but then counts 1-2-3 whenever anyone does it.  Spoke with Kana to try to get him to speed it up, and cut out the chaff, but he just became more rigid (possibly insulted by having a young woman criticize him).  Audrey & I finally took off on our own to investigate the many temples.  Mostly interesting, though the statues for the most part are more amateurish than in previous temples.  The primary statue (Buddha, Yama, Lao Tse) is usually well done,  but the supporting characters are more disneyesque and crude.  The building decorations are also crudely painted, rather than the fine work seen in the Mosque, Summer Palace, Longye Gong.  “The history of this tower can be traced back a long time ago.”  On entering we had wondered about one of the rules listed on bulletin board.  But after the tour, we realized it might be required:  Rule 7 was “Do not abuse or beat up the staff.”

Dinner – welcome banquet.  Local preserved bean curd, dried little fish, seaweed, as appetizers.  Dentritum in spicy sauce (excellent), skewers of mushrooms, beef and pepper in sauce; corn & glutinous rice pearls; steak with garlic (tender); deep fried sea bass with sweet sauce; deep fried prawns with garlic and pepper in spicy sauce (excellent); bok choy; rice cakes (Dougi); fruit; chocolate cake
