Vietnam - War Remnants Museum |
A powerful and emotional visit, especially for anyone who lived through the war years 1960-1975. The
War Remnants Museum
in Saigon has been labeled 'propaganda' by some visitors, but I found the displays
and exhibits to be reasoanably balanced and fair. Some 'facts' may be
jarring to visitors - eg, the museum notes that over 500 people were killed at
the My Lai village complex in 1968, and this number is higher than the
US government provided. However this higher number is now generally
considered to be correct. (

The museum mostly covers the American War (known in the USA as the Vietnam War) also known as the second Indochina War, but also includes many exhibits relating to the first Indochina War involving the French colonialists. Outside are period military vehicles including: One building reproduces the "tiger cages" in which the South Vietnamese government kept political prisoners. Other exhibits include graphic photography, accompanied by a short text in English, Vietnamese and Japanese, covering the effects of Agent Orange and other chemical defoliant sprays, the use of napalm and phosphorus bombs, and war atrocities such as the My Lai massacre. The photographic display includes work by Vietnam War photojournalist Bunyo Ishikawa that he donated to the museum in 1998.
