8 am left Hanoi to drive to the coast for Ha Long boat trip. Traveling along Red River, succession of fields & small towns. Mostly light industry – Canon factory, shoe factory, coal fired power plants;

Harvested recently, farmers now preparing fields for setting out 2nd planting of rice in a few; other fields of vegetables – lettuce, onions, cilantro Rest stop at crafts factory – monstrous sculptures (larger than life buddhas and Virgin Mary's), lacquer, embroidery, rubies, sapphires

Many large housing projects built on spec 6 yrs ago now remain empty; other small buildings; strange looking when standalone - can’t build windows on sides since someone can build right next to it

Broad Red River valley changes to karst hills until coast with hundreds of undercut karst islands. Many tour boats, some much larger than our 30 pp boat (we have only 11 on board)
