Vietnam - French Colonial Saigon |
A walking tour reveals Saigon’s historic landmarks. Dong Khoi street. or Rue Catinat as it was known in the time of the French occupation, reveals some of the beautiful French colonial buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Majestic Hotel,
the Caravelle & Le Grand have been refurbished. Close by is the Antiques market, a street with
curios, porcelains and other objects. An abnormally
high number of shops have china and porcelain from an 1548 shipwreck (had also seen pieces in a museum in Hoi An)
The Opera House and the former Hotel de Ville which are still two of the finest buildings in Saigon and are a frequent backdrop for wedding pictures. The Notre Dame Cathedral is a red brick edifice with twin spires based on the original construction from Paris and interesting stained glass windows. Across from it is the French post office which still functions and also a place to pay utility bills.
